Brand-new to Cursor and coding? Your first hour, step by step

The failure: you installed Cursor, stared at the chat box, typed "build me an app," got 30 files you can't read, and froze. Starting big is the problem, not you.

Your first hour: one tiny, real change

1. Make an empty folder called my-first-project on your Desktop. In Cursor: File → Open Folder… and pick it. Cursor only sees what's inside the folder you open.

2. Open a new Agent chat. Make sure the mode picker says Agent.

3. Ask for a plan, not code. Pick something harmless, like a text file with three things you need to do today. Paste:

I'm new to coding. I want to: [one small thing].

Do NOT write or edit any files yet. Give me:
1. A plan of 3-5 short steps in plain English.
2. Which files you'd create or change.
3. Anything you're unsure about that you need to ask me.

Keep it under 150 words.

4. Check you understood it. Can't explain the plan in your own words? Reply: "Explain that plan like I'm new to this."

5. Ask for step 1 only. "Do step 1 of the plan only. Change as few files as possible and tell me how to see it working."

6. Look at it before you Keep it. Cursor writes the edit to your files as it works, then shows a red/green diff. Open the file or run the command. Broken? Click Undo.

7. Click Keep only when you saw it work. Then repeat with the next tiny thing.

What "done" looks like

You have one real file you asked for, you saw it work, and you can describe what it does in one sentence. That's day one. Skip the "app" for now.
